This document presents different metrics systems used within an open and decentralized value network. In order to quantify value for reference and accounting, it is necessary to make justifiable measurements about an item or event along one or more axes of mutually agreed and mathematically consistent meaning.


Time

Enters as duration of an activity, but also as a coordinate, i.e. how far in the past the activity was performed. The time coordinate is taken into consideration in many metrics. It is related to seniority, regularity of contributions, amount of risk (if the contribution is made at the beginning of a project or towards the end)...

Space

Can be physical, like a lab, a warehouse, a store, or virtual, like a website, a forum, etc. Basically, it is a context of location for value creation which gives further meaning to other contributions.

Volume

A measure of quantity, like basic ideas of size, number of items, scale, magnitude, for calculating aggregate value.

Stability

Probability of value retention over time - things like durability, reusability, fragility, reproducability, context-specificity, of a product or service.

Culture

An experimental area for defining positive impact in the sense of community and belonging as a result of peer production ventures.

Environment

Measurement of "external" input/output/impact in areas like raw materials, byproducts, ecosystem health,

Individual

An important and broad collection of measurements for the nature of personal contributions to a process or product. May include elements of skill/talent assessment (accreditation, qualification (role), personal reputation), intensity and focus of activities (a cofactor of the value of time invested), use of personal equipment or facilities, intellectual capital and much more. Reputation tells how value is created by individual members and can reference to commitment, ethics, etc.

Satisfaction

A kind of feedback system or collective reputation where recipients of value may respond with a subjective evaluation of their relative satisfaction based on comparison between expectations and actuality or other factors like integrity of communication, follow-up service/support relationship, community impacts, etc.

Material

A tangible object used in activities, a tool, an equipment, a part (something that goes into a product), a consumable... See discussion about use of material. We agree that the material is evaluated based on its use value in a particular project. Also, distinction between contributions to the pool of shareables and merely sharing...

Financial

Distinction between temporary financial contributions - the member asks for money back, like a loan, and permanent contributions, which are treated as investment. Evaluating contributions with space.

Distinction between contributions to the pool of shareables or commons and merely giving temporary or conditional access.

Social

Providing access to a market or customer base and other special privileges or network effects that add value to a business proposition. May include legal affordances and protections, or simple extension of trust/reputation to create new relationships and opportunities.

Activity

This tells how viable the value network is. The metrics helps quantify how motivated, energetic, committed, and genuine are members and lends to reputation of the whole.

Synergy

Measure of how projects influence each others. Work for one project can also advance another project. Resources created within one project are used in another project.
